Pinot Envy

Synopsis

Meet Woody Robins, a bon vivant, devil-may-care wine guru who specializes in investigatory work involving rare artifacts of a vinous nature. Amidst the backdrop of world-famous Napa, California wine country and upbeat, cosmopolitan "city by the bay”, San Francisco, Woody finds he’s bitten off more than he can chew when hired by a wealthy grape grower to retrieve his stolen, rare, priceless, large bottle of red Burgundy that once belonged to the French emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte. Tested by a colourful cast of characters, deceit, blackmail, intrigue, dealings with the mob and even murder ensue. With the help of his dozy boyhood chum, girlfriend, aunt and detective buddy with San Francisco’s finest, he eventually manages to unravel the case, but not before he learns a thing or two about himself.

Praise for Pinot Envy By Edward Finstein

"From the title to the plot, this is one book that hits on all cylinders: humor, mystery, adventure. A really entertaining read, the history of wine is told in a thrilling, exciting way. Woody is definitely not your usual detective in style or credentials, and has a tendency to draw attention to himself by wearing the old-style ‘Zoot Suits’ and hats. He can’t for the life of him blend into any situation, but standing out wherever he goes with his vim and vigor, allows people to always root for Woody as he falls into mess after mess that he has to get out of in order to appear (hopefully soon) in his next whodunit!”
- SUSPENSE MAGAZINE

“With Pinot Envy, author Edward Finstein demonstrates an exceptional talent for producing a finely crafted mystery that capture’s the reader’s complete attention from first page to last. Pinot Envy is an extraordinary and deftly crafted novel, making it especially recommended for community libraries’ Mystery-Suspense collections and the personal reading lists of dedicated mystery buffs.”

- BOOKLIST (BARBARA BIBEL, REFERENCE LIBRARIAN, OAKLAND, CA PUBLIC LIBRARY; AND CHAIR, ALA’S SOPHIE BRODY MEDAL COMMITTEE)

"In Woody Robins, Ed Finstein has created a character who’s not only a snappy dresser, but also a very crafty investigator. Pinot Envy crackles with wit, intelligence, and humour. Here's hoping that the Wine Doctor has more prescriptions on his pad”
- BILL MACLEAN, ENTERTAINMENT COLUMNIST, BEACH METRO NEWS, TORONTO, ONT

"Our employee reading group DEFINITELY wants to order this book because, in part, there really is very little wine-related FICTION published. That greatly surprises me. Wine is SO popular these days and such a part of the popular culture.”
- OSKAR BYNKE, CO-OWNER, HERMANN J. WIEMER VINEYARD, DUNDEE, NY

"Edward Finstein knows his wine and he packages that knowledge in a fast-paced murder mystery that’s as intriguing and enjoyable as a glass of fine Pinot Noir."
- TONY ASPLER, AUTHOR, AND MEMBER OF THE ORDER OF CANADA

"A spirited story for lovers of mysteries, history, and wine. Finstein starts out fast and keeps up the pace until the pieces and players find their unexpected places. Enjoy with the world's oldest beverage.”
- STEVE LEGENDRE, WINE COLLECTOR, BALTIMORE, MD

"Pinot Envy is well-plotted and moves from page-to-page. It should certainly appeal to those mystery fans tired of twee mysteries dealing with cooking subplots. Here’s a hard-driven story in the roman noir style.”
- DEAN TUDOR, CREATOR OF CANADA'S LEADING WINE SATIRE SITE (WWW.DEANTUDOR.COM)

"…by the end of the story I found myself rooting for this crazy fool with the big heart. This is a great read for those who do not like bloody violence in their mysteries.”
- KENDRA BOOK GIRL

"Pinot Envy, by Edward Finstein, is a fast-moving, unique mystery which captivates the reader from the very first sentence. Mr. Finstein, aka ‘The Wine Doctor,’ is an internationally-known wine expert who uses his extensive knowledge to practically guarantee poor souls who know little about vinous history a virtual college education in wine. After devouring Mr. Finstein’s seamlessly-written story, I will never again mindlessly swallow a sip of wine.”
- ALMA H. BOND, PH.D., AUTHOR OF JACKIE O: ON THE COUCH, AND CREATOR OF THE "ON THE COUCH" SERIES

"I found Doc Finstein’s Pinot Envy an easy and engaging read which will appeal to both your garden-variety mystery reader and to more hardened ones as well. I look forward to the next in the series.”
- SHEILA SWERLING-PURITT, TIDINGS COLUMNIST, WINE WRITERS CIRCLE OF CANADA

"… a very compelling mystery. This classic ‘whodunnit’ will leave you guessing from first page to last."
- RICK WIGMORE, PRESIDENT & CEO, RAVENSHOE GROUP

“Wine writer Edward Finstein has successfully tried his hand at mystery writing in Pinot Envy. This is an engaging book, whether sitting outside on your deck in the summer sipping a Sauvignon Blanc, or by the fireplace in the winter, nursing a Tawny Port. A murder/theft mystery combined with some educational notes on Burgundy and the noble grape, this is an easy and light read, suitable for wine geeks, newbies, and everyone else in between. If this tome were a bottle of wine, I’d give it a ‘90.’”
- IRWIN WEISS, WINE AFICIONADO, BALTIMORE, MD

“Readers will toast author Edward Finstein with a less costly pinot for an engaging character-driven whodunit.”
- HARRIET KLAUSNER, AMERICA’S NUMBER ONE BOOK CRITIC

“While pinot and the Napa Valley aren't natural bed partners – unless you're in the cooler climes of Carneros – the latest whodunnit for wine lovers is a Burgundy-stained whirl around the premier Californian region. The storyline line includes myriad threats, the involvement of the Mafia, and the murder of an auction house employee. And wine, of course.”
